Renée wins the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2026

A first in Dunkirk.

Bib Michelin Dunkerque

In Dunkirk, gastronomy has just reached a new milestone. On February 9, 2026, the Michelin Guide unveiled its new Bib Gourmand selection for the 2026 edition. Among the 75 new restaurants awarded in France, one Dunkirk establishment stands out:
Renée, the contemporary brasserie of chef Charles Bruneval, located on Place Paul Asseman, a stone's throw from the Malo-les-Bains seawall.

This is a first for Dunkirk. After a notable entry in the 2025 Michelin Guide, this new distinction confirms what regulars already knew: at Renée's, the food is remarkably good, at a price that remains affordable.

What is the Michelin Bib Gourmand?

The Bib Gourmand is a distinction created in 1997 by the Michelin Guide. Unlike stars, which reward gastronomic excellence regardless of price, the Bib Gourmand honors restaurants that offer the best value for money.

In the regions, the Guide sets the bar at around €40 for a complete meal, excluding drinks. In concrete terms, a Bib Gourmand restaurant means:
● High-quality, refined, and generous cuisine
● Carefully selected and expertly prepared ingredients
● A reasonable bill, with no unpleasant surprises
● A complete experience: from the ambiance to the plate

In 2026, France boasted 430 Bib Gourmand establishments, a figure that testifies to the richness and diversity of the French gastronomic scene.

Why was Renée awarded this distinction?

The Michelin Guide inspectors, anonymous and independent, visit each restaurant several times before making their decision. At Renée, they found what defines Chef Charles Bruneval's signature style: solid and precise traditional cuisine, featuring local products from Dunkirk and the Hauts-de-France region.

The Guide particularly highlights the perfect cooking techniques, the richness of the sauces, and the technical mastery of a chef who trained in the kitchens of Michel Rostang, Guy Savoy, and Thierry Marx in Paris. From skate wing à la grenobloise to pâté en croûte, not forgetting the shrimp croquettes, each dish testifies to expertise honed alongside the very best.

But Renée is also a state of mind. Charles Bruneval wanted to create a place in the image of his grandmother, after whom the restaurant is named: a warm and welcoming place where you feel at ease, where technique serves flavor, and where the chef connects with his guests. No pretension, no stuffy formalities, just sincere and generous cuisine.

Dunkirk on the gastronomic map

This distinction puts Dunkirk on the map of French gastronomy. For a long time, the city wasn't associated with haute cuisine. Renée's inclusion in the Michelin Guide in 2025, followed by the Bib Gourmand in 2026, changed everything. For the people of Dunkirk, it's a source of pride. For visitors to the Opal Coast, it's yet another reason to stop by. And for food lovers who follow the Michelin Guide, it's an address to discover or rediscover. Renée isn't the only restaurant in the North to have received this distinction this year.

Four other restaurants in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region have joined the 2026 Bib Gourmand selection, bringing the total number of Bib Gourmand establishments in the region to 13. A sign that the North is indeed establishing itself as a land of gastronomy.

What awaits you at Renée:

A menu that changes with the seasons
At Renée, the menu evolves with the seasons and the availability of fresh produce. Charles Bruneval works directly with local producers and draws on the rich terroir of Dunkirk. Smoking, an age-old Dunkirk tradition, inspires some of its most iconic creations, such as the smoked potato emulsion that has become a signature dish.

An intimate and refined setting
Smoky green walls, custom-made solid oak tables crafted by an artisan from Tourcoing, unique ceramics from Poterie Sauvage, fresh bouquets from La Pensée... Every detail has been carefully considered to create a warm atmosphere, somewhere between a bistro and a fine dining establishment. A place where local craftsmanship meets gastronomy.
